9 International Collaborations That Turned Out To Be Major Flops

At some point in the career of a Nigerian musician, he seeks to break out from his domain to conquer bigger territories and that in itself is never a bad idea. In fact, it is healthy to grow and metamorphose into something bigger and even better.

Part of the strategy for growth and international breakthrough has always been to feature a foreign ‘international’ artiste. This plan is to easily gain penetration into the foreign music market on the wings of this very big international star. Perhaps, more traction may be gained after a ‘global star’ in put on a track by a ‘local artiste’.

That quest to take the African sound global has been around for quite a long time. In recent times phenomenal progress has been made with regards to that dream. Nigerian music stars are easily picking up international collaborations it begins to feel like these foreign artistes live around the hood.

In all these, many artistes have tried securing an international collaboration and some of the results have not always matched the hype around those tracks. Simply put those songs flopped big time.

Maybe you can remember some, here are some the most underwhelming international collaborations that actually happened.

1.. Wizkid – Drop ft Wale (2013)

This was Wizkid’s first attempt at securing an international collaboration. He reached out to MMG rapper with Nigerian roots Wale. A song titled ‘Drop’ was made; it did not give the Wizkid international buzz he wanted.

2.. D’banj – Blame It On The Money ft Snoop Lion & Big Sean (2013)

How many people even remember Dbanj did a song together with Big Sean and Snoop? This highly publicized international collabo did not hit the spot. It was just a flop despite the big names.

3.. Ice Prince – I Swear ft French Montana (2013)

Fresh after winning the BET Award as ‘Best International Act: Africa’, Ice Prince felt like he was ready to conquer the world. The Jos breed rapper opted for an international collaboration to push his name and music further. Ice factored he could get French Montana on his ‘Fire of Zamani’ album and they recorded ‘I Swear’. You and I know that track changed nothing for Ice Prince.

4.. D’banj – Scape Goat (Remix) ft Kanye West (2013)

The Kokomaster got a lot of buzz when he signed across the dotted lines to become an artiste under G.O.O.D Music. The Nigerian entertainer capitalized on his relationship with Kanye West and managed to get the rapper on his ‘Scape Goat’ remix. Needless to say, this was a waste of resources as the song didn’t come out right.

5.. Wizkid – Show You The Money (Remix) ft Tyga (2014)

What a hit ‘Show You The Money’ was for one of Africa’s biggest music export Wizkid. However, the Surulere born artiste wanted to extend the success of the song so he went for an international remix. He got troubled American rapper Tyga on the remix, the result was just awful.

6.. Davido – Fans Mi ft Meek Mill (2015)

Taking his craft to the next level which would be going international was the next thing for Davido to do. The son of the billionaire businessman contacted another MMG rapper Meek Mill for a new song ‘Fans Mi’. After all the social media hype it turns out ‘Fan Mi’ came out as rather lukewarm.

7.. D’banj – Confidential ft Idris Elba & Shadow Boxxer (2015)

D’banj never gives up, right? The businessman and music star went in again for some international acclaimed record. This time he featured international movie star Idris Elba and Shadow Boxxer on ‘Confidential’. The result was simply underwhelming, up to date the song has not crossed 1.5 million views on YouTube.

8.. Wizkid – Shabba ft Chris Brown x Trey Songz & French Montana (2016)

I bet very few people would remember Wizkid did a song like this last year. ‘Shabba’ unfortunately has two versions one featuring Section Boyz and Hoody Baby. Despite the hype surrounding the song it failed to become a hit, it just passed away like a bad day.

9.. Davido – Pere ft Rae Sremmurd & Young Thug (2017)

Since its release, Pere has to be the most criticized song coming from Davido. Worst still it is an international collaboration with big names on it Swae Lee from Rae Sremmurd & Young Thug. ‘Pere’ is adjudged the worst release ever from the DMW boss.
